1st – 31st July: Andrew Mackenzie Still Surfacing

In this new body of work, Andrew Mackenzie confronts heterogeneous notions concerning the history of art, aesthetics, and man's relationship to his natural environment.

5th - 28th August: Barry Cawston

Barry Cawston's photographs visually declare accidental beauty produced by banal human constructs. His supreme eye for composition turns the detritus of society into images filled with optimism and beauty.

2nd September - 2nd October: Jenny Pockley

Jenny Pockley has been producing magnificent work for this new series on New York. Jenny has captured both the luminosity and iridescence of this famous city, whilst also making stunning visual statements which embody the iconic character of New York.

7th - 30th October: Paul Riley

Paul Riley has been producing a new body of work, painting still life on monochromatic backgrounds. The success of the work lies in the beauty of calm and stillness expressed on the canvas, crossed with the visual intensity of the chosen object.

4th - 27th November: Maisie Broadhead

Sarah Myerscough Fine Art is delighted to be exhibing new work by Maisie Broadhead. Maisie will continue the aesthetic of her series Jewellery Depicted, whilst also producing works which develop this series in a new direction.

We would be delighted if you could join us for Nicholas Jolly’s long awaited return to the London art scene, with his solo exhibition The Age of Anxiety at Sarah Myerscough Fine Art from from the 16th of April until the 8th of May.

We also have a busy month coming up in May, with the gallery exhibiting turned wood by artists such as Liam Flynn, Marc Ricourt and Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling at COLLECT, Contemporary Crafts Fair 14th – 17th of May, held at the Saatchi Gallery. We will also be exhibiting TURNED WOOD in the gallery between 14th of May and 1st of June.

We are very excited to be exhibiting at the New York Affordable Art Fair between the 6th and 9th of May. We are delighted to be showing new work by artists such as Jenny Pockley and Alicia Dubnyckyj, who have been commissioned by the gallery to produce new paintings of the iconic architecture of New York.

Sue Morgan - The Various Lives of Thought - The Voyage Continues!

After exhibiting Sue Morgan's installation at the recent London Art Fair Project Spaces we are now pleased to announce that her work has taken up residency in the gallery and will be shown until 22 February.

The Private View on 21 January 2010 was well attended and enjoyed by all. Sue Morgan's evocative and wonderfully animated talk opened up the depths and intricacies of the project and thoroughly enraptured all that were lucky enough to hear.

The installation comprises the relics of an expedition in search of a thought inside the head.
The black box of the mind has been opened by the invention of non-invasive brain-imaging technologies that have revolutionised the neurosciences. In this fictional expedition machines have been constructed to mimic this development, but here the contemporary materialism on which much of neuroscience is predicated is taken to an absurd conclusion: these instruments are able to freeze neural configurations in space and time and to display them optically as objects composed (contingently) of clay and wax.
These playful coalesced thoughts, in a further twist, also appear to find themselves, like little gods, taking on journeys of their own: the rebirth of the minds from which they have been extracted.
The second element of the voyage plays on the phenomenological turn in the philosophy of mind (the birth of consciousness studies) and employs the concept of mapping the mind from inside the skull, resulting in multiple maps and atlases of introspective geography, an absurd adventure, being an act of tracing in the points and lines of a non-spatial entity.
The concept of a voyage inside the head prompted the display of the instruments and specimens in, on & adjacent to shipping crates, unloaded in dry dock from the ship (the neural shipping news). The black insides of the crates gesture toward the fact that despite the transparency occasioned by neuroimaging, the phenomenological character of the mental remains opaque from the outside.

Julian Grater's fabulous new show The Lichen Factor is opening tonight. To give you a taster of what it's all about, please read on:

Julian Grater’s new work opens a painterly dialogue with the uncertainty and delicacy of the Arctic’s natural phenomena, and through contemplative and elegiac reflection, he physically and psychologically constructs his landscapes. Grater’s work sits on the border of a figurative and abstract style, representing mountainous scenes, weather stations, and the presence of man in the seemingly infinite white landscapes of the Sub Arctic and Arctic North. Grater’s work subtly blends the borders between contemporary science, art and politics. The exhibition presents not the conclusion of a body of work but the genesis of a project that will develop for many years to come.

The show looks wonderful so please come down to the gallery to see it for yourself!

In other gallery news, we are very much looking forward to Sue Morgan's project space at London Art Fair, Islington, in January (13th -17th). The project space will be a development of her ongoing project into fictional machines and their ability to work through language and catch immaterial thoughts, transforming them into material sculptures. With absolutely fascinating theoretical dexterity and vulnerable artistic maneouvering, this will be a mixed media installation not to be missed.

Anthony Francis, whose first London solo show we have just had, is off to Frankfurt at the moment, visiting the German galleries who represent him. We are incredibly excited about the international career ahead of this young and inspiring artist.

DLA Piper Art Award 2009 - Winner Announced

The current exhibition at the gallery is the DLA Piper Graduate Art Award 2009. Over the course of last Summer, we visited approximately 40 degree shows across the UK, and presented a shortlist of 45 artists to a committee including Tony Bevan, the established British painter, Sue Hubbard, a freelance critic, and Alex Dell, a partner at DLA Piper. Six finalists were selected, and their work will be on display at the gallery until 13 June.

On the evening of the 21st May, DLA Piper opened the show, and selected Sachiyo Nishimura as the winner of this year's award. Sachiyo's photographs have urban landscape as their subject matter, exploring the homogenisation that human intervention causes to our environment.

Sue Hubbard wrote that:

The work that was finally chosen displayed not only skill and originality, but also showed an awareness of the world we live in, with its pressing problems of war, climate change, mental health issues and globalisation. Anahita Rezvanir’s Goyaesque images and Kate Ive’s subtle installation both demonstrate sensitivity to politics without ever being didactic, whilst Helen Saunders and Louise Carreck warn, in their uncanny images, of a dystopian future. Something, too, of the terrible beauty of industrialisation is captured in Sachiyo Nishimura’s poetic, yet spare images, while Sue Morgan’s installation, which borrows from surrealism, trawls the depth of the psyche, investigating mental fragility.
Our aim was to choose art that was not only visually engaging but that also made us think and challenged our preconceptions. We believe that this is what we have achieved with this brave new work.

The gallery had the most successful year to date at Collect, helped by the stunning new venue at the Saatchi Gallery, and a wonderful selection of work produced by the selection of wood turners. All of the pieces have been removed from the gallery, and are now in storage. They are however easily accesible, so do ring to arrange viewings. As winner of the UK competition, Nick has been selected for the ING Fresh Eyes Exhibition which asks emerging artists to interpret the unique spirit and passion of Formula 1 racing. An international exhibition, it gives artists an unsual oppurtunity to see the F1 experience from the inside, providing the artists with unparalleled access to the ING Renault team. Furthermore, Nick will also be mentored by Sir Peter Blake, renowned British Pop artist, in order to foster his further development. Alison Mills new series

Alison Mills has recently started a new series of work. Continuing her reinvention of traditional landscape, the paintings now contain traces of human presence. As in previous work the image is informed by elements of chance and spontaneity created during the painting process. A heightened colour palette emphasises the dualities in the work that are at once seductive yet surreal and other-worldly. Gallery Artist Michele Fletcher has been awarded the ROSL Hospitalfield Scholarship 2008.

The core aim of the Royal Over-Seas League, founded in 1910, is to promote friendship, understanding and mutual respect between the peoples and cultures of the Commonwealth. The ROSL’s Royal Charter specifically direct that the League ‘….encourage the arts amongst young people of the commonwealth’. To this end in the sphere of the visual arts, and annual exhibition was established in 1984.

Since 2000 the ROSL Annual Exhibition has concentrated on five artists from five different Commonwealth countries (or former Commonwealth countries), one from each of the five continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe. Countries and regions change each year.

In order to make work for the Scholarship, winning artists are awarded a month-long residency in Hospitlafield House, Arbroath. Overlooking the North Sea, Hospitalfield House surrounded by its own small estate, is situated a mile from Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland. Originally built during the thirteenth century as a hospital, the building was dramatically altered between 1850 and 1890 by Patrick Allan Fraser, who bequeathed it to the Patrick Allan Fraser Trust devoted to 'Education in the Arts'.

Throughout the 20th century the estate hosted an annual summer school for the most outstanding students at Scotland’s four art colleges. Today Hospitalfield is a place of study for students of the arts from all over the world. Short and long term visual arts residencies have increasingly become a vital part of the programme at Hospitalfield.

Featuring recent acquisitions from Arts London’s permanent collection, the works delve into the beauty and stillness of the nocturnal world. From dreams and nightmares, to desolate landscapes and abandoned buildings, this exhibition is a playful examination of what happens after dark.

Throughout history myths, legends and folklore have evolved around the danger, debauchery, and magic of the twilight hour. From Dusk till Dawn explores these clandestine activities alongside the quiet beauty of night, through photography, painting and film.

From Dusk Till Dawn reveals works by twenty four of the best emerging artists to have graduated in the last five years, which have been purchased for Arts London’s growing collection.

Gallery Artist Ben Ashton has recently graduated from the Slade School of Art, where his degree show exhibition comprised of an ambitiously created construction incorporating stereoscopic paintings, a large kaleidoscope, camera obscuras, and performances.
